Do You Have To Hand Over Your Facebook Password To Your Employer?

With the rise of social networking sites Managers want to review publicly available Facebook profiles, Twitter accounts and other websites to learn more about job candidates and Employees.

Many Facebook users don’t have their profiles set to private, which would make them available only to selected people or certain networks. There is a big difference between an Employer viewing public postings and private information.

Employees and potential employees should have a right to keep their Facebook, Twitter or other social media profiles containing confidential information private from the prying eyes of their bosses.

Employees and job applicants have an expectation of privacy when it comes to using social media such as Facebook and Twitter, including a right to have their right to free speech protected.

There is no need for Employers to demand access to applicants or employees’ private password protection information stored online. Yet there have been a number of reports of job applicants during interviews being asked to log into their Facebook and other websites and allow potential Employers to browse their profile, acquaintances and other personal information, whilst others are simply being asked to list their passwords on job applications. Other job applicants have even been asked to friend human resource managers!

Traditionally Employers havn’t demanded that job applicants hand over the keys to their house or bank account information, therefore why should they be able to gain access to their private information stored online?

It is like allowing your Employer to access your mail to see if there is anything of interest inside. It would be giving Employers the ability to act as an imposter and assume the identity of an employee, continually access, monitor and possibly even manipulate an employee’s personal social activities, communications, associations and opinions.

Facebook’s Statement of Rights And Responsibilities provides that sharing or soliciting a Facebook password is a violation of their terms of service, however Employers can’t count on Facebook suing an Employer for such a violation.

Legislation is being passed to address the current situation, based on the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, which deals with computer hacking, to safeguard Employees’ online identities. The Passwords Protection Act of 2012 will prohibit employers accessing “protected computers” where social media files are kept.

Subject to some exceptions, it will prevent employers from forcing employees and prospective employees to provide access to their private online systems, including Facebook, e-mail and other online storage.

The Bill is broad in its drafting and isn’t limited to any specific website. It focuses on the servers where information is housed or stored, taking the emphasis off having to identify and define a particular type of internet service. This means an employer will not be able to force an employee to provide access to their Facebook or Twitter account as a condition of their employment.

It will forbid Employers forcing employees to provide access to information held on any computer not owned or controlled by the employer. The Act will protect information even if it’s accessed on a computer owned by the employer. It will also prohibit an employer from discriminating or retaliating against a prospective or current employee if that employee refuses to provide access to a password-protected account.

Therefore if an employee is just looking at a social network on their work computer, an employer won’t be able to force the employee to disclose a password, as this would then enable the employer to access another computer, being the computer of the relevant social nework the employee is perusing. The protection conferred by the Act extends to gmail accounts, photo sharing websites and employee owned smart phones.

As the Act is drafted in a manner which is largely technology-neutral, it’s effect is not likely to be impacted by changes in technology. New online technologies continue to evolve and emerge, causing legislation to become outdated. However, because the Passwords Protection Act of 2002 isn’t limited to the protection of a particular service like a social network service, it is flexible enough to foreshadow evolving uses of technology, as it focuses on access to a computer.

The Act covers any new service as long as it’s not housed on any employer’s computer. There are however exceptions in the legislation and students are not protected from social media monitoring and can therefore be forced to hand over their social network passords.

However there is another Act to be introduced, the Social Networking Online Protection Act, which will plugs this gap by conferring protection upon both employers and students.

However if you are a Government employee or an employee who works with children under the age of 13, the Act enables States legislating in this area to provide an exemption, whilst another exception enables the executive branch to exempt entire classes of workers if they come into contact with classified information, including soldiers. These exceptions to the protection conferred therefore sanction broad and sweeping fishing expeditions into Employees’ private lives and communications.

There are already in existence a broad range of means for investigating employee misconduct. Further, internet activities constantly create many new types of records, and these can already be used against employees in investigations.

CONCLUSION

Whilst the new legislation is a major step forward in preventing Employers taking adverse action as a result of an employee’s refusal to provide access to their private accounts, Employers still reserve the right to permit social networking activities within their office only on a voluntary basis and implement policies in relation to employer operated computers. Once you are employed you may be required to sign an acceptable use policy relating to the use of social media within the workplace. You may have enjoy online free speech however you may be asked to sign a non-disparagement agreement which bans you from talking negatively about an employer on social media sites. Therefore employees who violate such acceptable use policies will still remain accountable for any activities which breach such policies.

Make Money Without Money – Repairing Lawn Mowers, Take a Cut For Yourself

Most families these days are looking for any way they can to make a little extra money without having to put out any money, if you are handy with small engines why not start a lawn mower repair business?

Lawn mowers need plenty of maintenance, especially when they sit all winter long. Most of that maintenance is fairly simple such as tune ups, draining gas and replacing it with fresh, or sharpening the blade. Often times though people do not think to get these things done and before long, simple maintenance becomes more costly and complex.

This leaves the door open if you know how to work on small engines such as these, not only lawn mowers, but gas powered weed eaters, snow blowers and any other sort of small gas engine. Many people do not know how to properly maintain this type of equipment and just advertising maintenance alone could bring you a good source of income.

If you have the tools offer blade sharpening services, and even engine repair, while most mower repairs are simple, there will be the odd motor that will need to be replaced. As you make a bit of money invest it into purchasing used mowers and other equipment that you can bring back to life and sell for a profit. There is a thriving market for used lawn equipment pretty much anywhere you live.

Deciding what to charge your customers is easy, make calls to the repair shops around your neighborhood and ask them what they charge. Since you will be new to the business, be prepared to seriously undercut their prices, this will help you get and keep customers, and since you will be working out of your home, your overhead will be low anyway.

You will need to have a garage with a decent work bench and space to work, or even better yet if you have a van or truck you can advertise mobile repair. Mobile repair brings an even higher hourly fee since your customers are relieved of the responsibility of transporting their dirty lawn mower in the back of their brand new SUV.

The best way to advertise your business will be by enlisting your family to pass out fliers around the neighborhood, leave signs on telephones and advertise at your local grocery store.

Since this is a seasonal business keeping customers is essential, try to offer them extras if you can, like a free oil change or a loaner lawn mower while theirs is being worked on. Little extras like these along with a friendly attitude will keep them coming back year after year.

How Did Facebook Become So Popular?

Have You Heard Of Facebook?

By now, you are probably familiar with the popular social-networking website called Facebook.

According to Wikipedia, Facebook has more than 19 million registered users across 47,000 regional, work-related, college or high-school networks.

I Was Skeptical At First

Initially, I was very reluctant to embrace the Facebook phenomenon. However, my friends kept asking me “Hey Vincent, are you on Facebook?”…”Did you join Facebook yet” “You need to visit Facebook.” This went on for weeks.

Surprisingly, when I checked my Hotmail account, I also received invites from dozens of friends including Andre, David, Trisha, Renee and Kevin

How Did Facebook Become So Popular, So Fast?

Finally, I decided to visit this website called Facebook. Once and for all, I wanted to discover why Facebook is so popular. I wanted to know how they managed to gain millions of members in a few short months? How did they become so big, so fast? I had to know the truth. I wanted to know their secret!

Facebook’s Secret Exposed

Aside from having an easy to navigate layout, the ability to keep tabs on friends, great content, and, amazing search capabilities, Facebook is utilizing one of the most powerful viral marketing strategies ever conceived.

It’s so simple, but yet extremely powerful.

Once my account was created, I immediately clicked on the friends tab. I noticed a drop down menu with several options including Invite Friends. Once clicked, I was taken to a page that allowed me to Import Email Addresses from my Yahoo, Hotmail, AOL, and Gmail.

I was also greeted with the following message:

“Enter your email login info below and Facebook will securely import your contacts from

your address book.”

I simply inserted my email address and password and instantly all 78 of my Hotmail contacts appeared before me. With one click of a button, I was able to invite all my contacts to join Facebook.

I Quickly Realized The Power of This Application After using this tool to instantly invite all 78 of my Hotmail contacts; I quickly realized the power of this application! What impressed me the most was how simple it was to import and invite all of my contacts. Unlike traditional tell-a-friend forms, it only took a few seconds to invite 78 people using Facebook’s PHP address book importer.

By implementing this viral marketing strategy, Facebook has become one the most popular websites online.

5 Reasons Why Traditional Tell-A-Friend Forms Are Obsolete!

  • They forced your visitors to manually input email addresses.
  • Your visitors must also manually type the name beside each email address.
  • Most forms only have around 10 input fields. Remember, the average person, has over 100 web mail contacts. Why limit yourself?
  • People are lazy. Nobody wants to sit around and insert dozens of email addresses into your form!
  • Ongoing subscription fees.

Once you make the decision to upgrade to a PHP address book importer. You will need to implement a variety of marketing strategies to maximize your success. In other words, simply installing such a script is NOT good enough.

3 Viral Marketing Strategies You MUST Do In Order To EXPLODE Your Online Business

Strategy #1: Motivate Your Visitors!

Let’s get real. We live in a very selfish world. I’m sure you have a fabulous website. However, nobody is going tell his or her friends about it without asking the following question what’s in it for me? You will be surprised what people will do if you provide the right incentive! Offering Free Giveaways is a good place to start.

Strategy #2: Don’t Hide Your Tell-A-Friend Link

Hiding your link is a huge mistake. This is very frustrating to me. Most webmasters will place their tell-a-friend link at the bottom of their web page. They place it in some remote area of their web page and wonder why nobody uses it.

You must add your tell-a-friend link to the main navigation of your website. For example, most websites will have “About us”Contact Us” “Products” added to the primary navigation. Your tell-a-friend link must also be added to the primary navigation of your website.

Strategy #3: It’s All In The Name

Here’s an idea. Instead of using the same boring link title “tell-a-friend” Why not say “Free Ipod” “Free Coupon”, “Free E-Book” This will cause your visitors to actually click on the link. At that point, you can provide contest details / instructions.

Viral marketing is not a fad or gimmick. It’s a real marketing strategy that can increase the profitability of your business. Adding a PHP address book importer to your arsenal will instantly provide your visitors an easy way of inviting others to your website.

Facebook is already utilizing the new technology, shouldn’t you?

The Importance of Online Privacy Protection

With the alarming rate of internet fraud, it is important to employ online protection measures to protect you from being defrauded. Seeing as all the data gleaned about you on the internet has some significance to someone, it is advisable to be vigilant at all times while surfing the internet. Some websites generate their revenue by selling your personal information while hackers take advantage of your personal data to perform fraudulent activities like identity theft. Online privacy protection is therefore a collection of measures meant to relieve the outcry of a majority of the innocent individuals who have fallen prey to internet scams.

Online privacy protection measures can be viewed from different perspectives ranging from technological measures, privacy policies regulations and individual control of the personal information revealed on the internet. With a combination of all these privacy protection measures, internet users are rest assured that their data is protected from malicious users to a greater extent.

When it comes to internet privacy protection, individual control of the classified information you post on the internet offers the greatest percentage of protection. Practicing extra caution while surfing the internet therefore, goes a long way in safeguarding your data from malevolent users. Ensure that think twice before posting any personal information on the internet. If the information you are about to post will reveal your personal details like your phone number, home address or even financial information, it is advisable to avoid posting the information especially if you are not sure of the credibility of the websites. Also avoid clicking on links sent to you via unknown sources since most of these links contain spyware that clandestinely collect sensitive data and transmit the data to malicious users.

There are policies and regulations that govern the use of private information you submit to organizations that require your personal details to operate. Employers for example have a right to go through their staff member’s emails and browsing history as long as they use the company resources to surf the internet. However, there are restrictions to the extent in which the employer is allowed to access staff private information. Websites that requires your personal information like online shopping sites, financial institutions among others also have to have a clearly explained privacy policy that ensures confidentiality of the information collected. Should the organization disclose your personal information, the law will find then liable for any discrepancies caused.

As far as technology is concerned, there are various technological inventions designed to optimize protection of privacy online. There is a myriad of online protection software that are well equipped with security packages like firewalls, anti-spyware, data encryption functionality and anonymzing settings that thwart the efforts of malevolent users to pry on your privacy and gain unauthorized access to sensitive data.

A Brief History of Electronic Money

Electronic money is a recent invention which means that currency with real value can be exchanged for traditional cash; it is instead entirely virtual or digital. It is a new invention in the history of money and commerce. Electronic money only exists in digital format and is primarily based on the internet or smart cards that have a record of their stored value. The transactions which are electronically done are known as electronic money. Similar names for electronic money are electronic cash, e-money, digital money, digital currency or digital cash.

The computer age has made the creation of money possible. It began back in the 1960s when IBM and American Airlines created a system called SABRE (Semi-Automatic Busines Research Environment), this allowed offices of American Airlines fitted with terminals connected to telephone lines and helped agencies to check flight times, seat availability, and then make reservations electronically that could be paid by using a system of credits.

Banks in America and Europe has started using mainframe computers by the 1970s, it helped them track transactions. It was a system that proved to be a success internationally when currency exchange was needed.

Consumer uptake of electronic money was first noticed in France in 1982 with the introduction of the Minitel service. The US and UK had developed basic tele text service that helped televisions to display text directly onto the television screen like news, program guides, game show results or weather update. The teletext was a very useful and simple one way service.

The French Minitel service used a dumb terminal with built-in modem, the service operated over standard telephone lines and the terminals were equipped with full AZERTY keyboards. The subscribers typed messages or searched queries. These Minitel terminals were given for free to more than 9 million households to encourage business entrepreneurs. Payment could be made through credit card or charged to the telephone account. This marked the first use of electronic money in the consumer market.

In 1979, a slightly similar service was launched in the UK named Prestel. It supported equipment was costly and it required customers to call and arrange payment over the phone. A service known as Homelink started in 1983 with the support of the Bank of Scotland and Nottingham Building Society. The account holders could subscribe to a special Prestel service that allowed online banking. This marked the first recorded use of electronic money.

The year 1991 saw the introduction of internet in consumer market and the disbanding of the Arpanet network. It wasn’t long until 1992 when America Online took advantage of the new Internet and started offering retail services directly to their subscribers who could pay using a credit card.

The year 1994 took a leap of faith that internet would help businesses. Pizza Hut adopted a same model that was used by Peapod for allowing online pizza ordering with the choice of payments like credit card via internet or in cash on delivery.

Late 1990s proved to be an essential moment for electronic money. Amazon.com was launched in 1995 and PayPal was formed in 1998. This made convenient and easy payment of money online without any risk of credit card number theft. The innovation of PayPal was to offer virtual account to the customers that could be topped up using credit card or wire transfer. Then email addresses were used to receive and send money. The services of PayPal marked a unique beginning of electronic money which was different from traditional phone and online credit card transactions.

Furthermore, the model of PayPal was copied by other providers with new ideas for securing customer funds using gold standard, silver, platinum or palladium. However sending and receiving payments with an email address was flexible.

Virtual currency backed by precious metals can be exchanged for any supported currency. eLibertyReserve, e-gold and Webmoney have become the biggest gold backed electronic money providers.

Private currencies had also proliferated encouraged by the demand for some form or marketplace within networked games like World of Warcraft and Second Life. Since then, private currencies have developed in many forums and webmaster services as a means of offering advertising amongst members.

The most successful electronic money has been facilitated with stored value cards that are denominated in local currency. The US military designed a stored value card called Eagle Cash that provided an advance on soldier’s earnings. Hong Kong also designed a stored value card for making quick purchase of subway tickets also accepted as a defacto cash card by many retailers in the city.

Why Every Business Owner Should Learn Digital Marketing

The reality is very few business owners feel that they have the time to learn digital marketing, however, what most of them quickly find is that by not taking the time to learn at least the found of what digital marketing is, it ends up costing them thousands over the life of their business.

You see, an entrepreneur has to generally learn as many different aspects of running an organisation as possible before they can hand over the reins to somebody else. The reason for this is because it allows them to understand the value of time and effort required to complete each task associated with their business. Now, where most others go wrong is by saying they don’t have the time to learn what’s required to promote their business online. Now, this happens pretty much every day with business owners all across the planet and what they generally do is outsource to an SEO or online marketing agency, even though they have little to no knowledge of what they are paying for and what the agency is actually doing for them.

Now while this approach isn’t a bad approach, this approach without having the required knowledge will cause a business to lose money in the future, because by having at east a little knowledge an entrepreneur can look for the best service at the best rate.

One main example of this would be when it comes to asking the general question of how much does digital marketing cost?

Now while it’s easy to look at online marketing as a commodity where all pricing is based on a simple set of factors and is exactly the same, the truth is much of digital marketing pricing is based largely on experience and knowledge gained over time.

So by understanding more about how digital marketing works and what is required in a digital marketing campaign you are putting yourself in the position to negotiate cheaper pricing over time.

It is very easy to see that a business owner that has taken the time to learn the steps required to put together a digital marketing campaign can utilise one of the best companies in the world for about 50 to 60% cheaper than somebody who hasn’t taken the time to learn the basics, and they will still get the same results.

Another reason business owners should learn digital marketing is so they can do the work for themselves.

The reality is most things in digital marketing, business owners do have the time to complete even though they think they don’t. The problem is they don’t know where to start or what is required in order to achieve results. If the business owner knew exactly what was required to get results they could do most of the digital marketing themselves requiring only a few hours a week in some cases to give their businesses the boost it needs to obtain results.

Also, it makes it easier to outsource certain aspects of digital marketing if you know what’s required to achieve results. For example, if you’re looking to gain results with digital marketing and you know what’s required however you don’t want to hire an agency that’s actually okay. The reason why this is okay is because in these situations you can pass on these tasks to employees, or you can pass on these tasks to friends or family or if you’re just looking for the cheapest rate you can actually pass on these individual tasks to virtual assistants who will do the work for generally about 80% less than most of your local SEO agencies however they need to be told what to do which is why an internet marketing training course for a business owner is almost a requirement to run a business in today’s market.

So the reality is if you’re really looking to grow a business online and you want the type of results that are required to sustain business in this day and age utilising the Internet and learning the basics of internet marketing is a necessity for every business owner.

If a business owner is willing to learn digital marketing, they are putting themselves in a position to guarantee long-term success for their business moving forward.

What is the Difference Between Blogging and Facebooking?

There seems to be a lot of overlap between what you might put on Facebook versus what you might put in a blog. They can both be personal. They can both contain your personal experiences and ideas, what you are doing and what you are interested in. In other words, they can both be like journals or diaries.

There are some obvious differences in the purpose behind each activity, however. Facebook is more interactive and the audience is, well, your friends. With a blog, the Web world is your potential audience, and your Facebook friends may never even know about or read your blog. Your blog can be interactive as well, as readers can comment on your posts and you can respond. But again, this interaction would probably be between you and a stranger rather than a friend. So there are, or can be, two distinct audiences.

There may be things that you would share with your friends on Facebook that you wouldn’t want your blog audience to know. On the other hand, you may have thoughts or experiences that you are more comfortable sharing with strangers on your blog than you would be sharing it with your Facebook friends.

Finally, your blog should have a theme, a purpose. People should have a specific reason for wanting to visit and read your blog, whether it’s informational, opinion, or promoting business. Your Facebook posts can be random, mundane, spontaneous, it doesn’t really matter because you aren’t trying to attract an audience – you are interacting with friends. So while there is the potential for overlap between Facebooking and blogging, it may be best to draw boundaries and let your audience be your audience and let your friends be your friends.

How Does Online Gaming Work?

Online gaming provides spirited or supportive games on computer with various users, through Internet or a local area network. Now, a question arises, why it is required to play against a computer once you have option to play with a human being? The answer for this question is that online gaming links you with various players of the globe and creates such an atmosphere for you where you can contend with each other and feel like a real situation.

Through online gaming, you can subjugate a rival of such a nature who doesn’t yet live in this world. The action between players is controlled through servers in net games while graphics and sound are handled with your computer. There are mass varieties of internet games to choose with. You can play complicated games promptly with the help of a rapid Internet connection.

Online gaming requires a network that includes solitary or more computers to work as servers. The computers of the players are termed as clients. Clients link to the server through the Internet or a local network. The server acts like an organization of the net gaming that keeps track with selected game of player, keeps records of player and also provides gossip between players.

At the time of playing game, the server facilitates the actions of every participant. As participants shift, play a card or blaze a weapon, the “state of the world” messages is sent to the server by their computers then after receiving the signals server transmits these signals to the other client computers immediately. Any movements that you make at the time of game emerge on other users’ computers. The client computer then transmits the sounds and graphics thus provides the visual effects for all players.

Internet games can be classified into two groups. One group that is accessible through centralized servers while other group that runs via distributed servers. Federal servers normally host the games that permit number of users to play simultaneously at the same time as is required in enormous players games like Ever Quest. The central server enclosed with a lot of information concerning the situation for these games. The world of game runs non-stop around the clock, hence the game continues either you play or not. Internet games by no means actually ends, you can continue play as per your desire. To start play user needs to open the client software that connects to the master server of the game.

While in a distributed system, server software stores numerous excited game servers on clients’ PCs. Instantaneous strategy is used in games such as Myth and 3D shooters like Quake III Arena etc. These games need very prompt updates known as “state of the world”. Distributed servers extend the pack of communication out; a solitary server hardly keeps up with numerous Quake players.

The game servers communicate signals to master server in every minute and the master server shows the addresses of every dynamic game servers. If you want to play then you need to get the list of active game servers available with the master server. Players can inquiry individual servers, from the information list, regarding the category of game exist on that server; the “ding time” and how many players are playing or duration requires for communicating of commands between the server and the player. Players generally select a server of the less ping time before they link straight to the game server.
